Dr. Hiwot Desta is an educator and medical doctor with extensive experience in academic and clinical settings, including teaching hospitals, Universities, colleges, and training institutions. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree with Distinction from Hawassa University School of Medicine, graduating with the second-highest GPA in her class. Her academic excellence extended beyond the classroom, as she consistently demonstrated outstanding performance in both curricular and extracurricular activities.
Dr. Desta further enhanced her qualifications with credentials in Medical Informatics and Health Administration from Toronto Metropolitan University. She also holds a wide range of certifications in areas such as Canadian medical culture, pedagogy, digital fluency, health unit coordination, and pain assessment and management.
She has successfully completed the Medical Council of Canada’s licensing examinations, including the Medical Council of Canada Evaluation Examination (MCCEE), the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE1), and the National Assessment Collaboration Objective Structured Clinical Examination (NAC OSCE).
Dr. Desta’s academic excellence was evident from an early age. She received numerous awards throughout her primary and secondary education and was recognized by the regional government of Ethiopia for her top performance in national examinations at Grades 10 and 12.
Professionally, Dr. Desta has worked across various healthcare environments, including hospitals, family medicine clinics, and travel health centers. She actively participates in Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs to stay current with medical advancements. Her studies in Digital Fluency at Humber College have further strengthened her technological competencies.
In addition to her clinical and academic roles, Dr. Desta has served as a Physician Medical Question Writer and Editor, a role that honed her academic writing skills and inspired her to establish Nile Elite Professional Hub—an educational initiative aimed at supporting learners in their academic and personal development.
A passionate lifelong learner, Dr. Desta is an avid reader with broad interests spanning medicine, psychology, anthropology, sociology, women’s issues, and religious studies. She is also deeply committed to community service, volunteering as a mentor at the Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Toronto and leading educational discussions on health and sociocultural topics via social media.
